We got out
for a bit this morning and drove up to the Cumberland Mountain State Park. This
is a good sized park with 1720 acres, and in the middle of it is Byrd Lake
which offers boating and fishing, for swimming there is an Olympic sized
swimming pool where for a small fee you can enjoy the pool on those hot summer
days. Fourteen of the 145 campsites have full hookups, the rest have water and
electric and are all first come, first serve. There is also a Jack Nicklaus 18-hole
golf course.
Most of the
structures, cabins, restaurant and picnic pavilions were built by the CCC from
1934 till the park opened in 1940. The most famous of the structures built by
the CCC is the two lane bridge/dam that connects the two sides of the
park. The natural stone, found on the
mountain is called Crab Orchard Sandstone. The bridge/dam is the largest
masonry structure ever built by the CCC.
