We travel to Skagway, Alaska

July 2, 2019

Skagway, AK is 103 miles from Whitehorse, YT. Whitehorse is where the people of Skagway go to do their grocery shopping, on a monthly basis. There is a small grocery store in Skagway, but they don't have a lot, they aren't very big and they may not be open all year. So, Whitehorse it is! When we lived in Heber Springs, AR, we use to travel to Little Rock, sometimes more than once a week if there were multiple doctor's appointments. The mileage from Heber to LR was about 60 miles each way, so, when looked at from that perspective, 103 miles wouldn't be that bad, if you didn't have to do it often.

Our destination in Skagway is Garden City RV. This is the same park we stayed at in 2015, and where Smokey disappeared from for 42 days! It's the only park in Skagway that offers sewer, so it's the preferred park as far as we are concerned.

On the way to Skagway, we stopped a few times to take in the sites, one such place was Caribu Crossing. This is a combination Museum, cafe, bakery, ice cream shop and small zoo. It contains one of the largest displays of taxidermist stuffed animals found in the area. We were there early, being the first group out (as Phil and I always are), the kids that work there told us our timing was good as there were about 1200 people off of cruise ships on buses headed there. We spent about 45 minutes there, but that length of visit wouldn't be possible for our later groups as the tour buses would eventually take up all the parking. We passed all those buses on the highway as we completed our trip. Tourism is the number one summer money maker up here and it is showing! I don't remember seeing a single tour bus heading out of Skagway in 2015, today we saw at least 20 on the highway.

This is Emerald Lake, you can't really tell because of the clouds being reflected on the water, but it is actually an Emerald green color, beautiful spot along the highway
